Photo Editing and Graphic Design for Mac

So I am looking for a Photoshop-like program for OS X. I have used the trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements and like that a lot. I would say that I am leaning towards buying that. Does anyone else know of some good similar programs for a Mac? I kind of just want to consider all of my options...

I am certain that there is an open source alternative for OSX but I can't name any in particular. There's a giant list of open source software for OSX that organizes programs into types (such as photo editing). Try googling that site. If you can't find it. I will post the link when I turn my mac on.

edit: here take a look at this site

I get a lot of rubbish from other people that it is an inferior imaging program, but I use it professionally. Ill post one of my projects in the random photo section. Each bear took me about 20 minutes (finding the right picture, editing, etc)

I have used GIMP before and did not like it. It is a great program in Windows, but the OS X version is a little klunky and weird. For as much as I use a photo editing program, I found GIMP in OS X to be kind of constraining.

Spike I will give that site a look.

^^That is exactly why I didn't suggest GIMP

I agree that GIMP is a pretty good alternative in windows but it doesn't work quite as nicely in OSX.

If you're going to buy a program, you might as well go all the way and get Photoshop. Hold off until CS3 is released, which will run speed on the Intel Macs. Unless you have a G5 or below then you could get CS2 now.

Hmm... I did not know there was a bit of a difference between the Linux/Windows versions and the Mac version.

I'd go for PS for the mac platform, I'm holding off on getting a new imac until they release a version of Finalcut that works with the new GPU cards in the intel macs

Final Cut Pro 5.1 works good with the intel macs. I'm still running the license that my high school gave me. They were going to discard the software anyways because they were getting a new shipment of G5's with Final Cut Pro on it. So they gave it to me, Score!!!

Currently the old quad G5's are the best video editing computers out there. The new Intels do ok, but you're emulating the processor completely so there's a significant speed hit.
