Alright. Right now if you are going with the most current processors on the market, I would buy an AMD Athlon 64 dual core processor. Something like this. Everything really depends on your price range though, but no matter what I would buy an AMD processor as of right now.

Tell us more of what you want and then we will be able to give you a better recommendation. Also if you check out some benchmarks at Tom's Hardware that will give you some idea of the differences between AMD and Intel processors.

here's a simple breakdown.

if you are a gamer, the athlon should do you better.

if you are more of a 3d rendering or video editing person, pentium is what you are looking for.

i do a little of both (gaming and video editing/photoshop) and i just went with the AMD simply because i preffer it. its really not that big of a difference but you will see small differences between the two. its mostly prefference. i recommend getting an Athlon64 since there doesn't appear to be an 64bit pentium at the moment.

There's a lot of differences. The architecture, they way commands are excecuted, pipelines, etc. You should really do some research on the two processors you want to puchase. It's very interesting.

well in technical terms, yea big difference. but if you were to just use it as a "normal" computer user that knows nothing of how a processor works. then they are pretty much the same

Wow, I don't have much to add but I thought I would mention that Intels are suppose to be better for mp3 encoding as well.

I bought an AMD because they seem to be the ones trying to advance the technology... maybe not, I don't really understand the differences either.

in terms of AMD processors, you get a bigger bang for the buck. well at least that applies here.
