Pentium or Celeron

Hi guys,

I just wanted some help on something i am building my own computer and wondering if there is a great deal of difference between a pentium cpu or a celeron cpu also im not sure what part the cache plays in it all these are the two cpus im thinking of buying

Celeron 3.2ghz 533FSB MODEL D 351 LGA775

INTEL PENTIUM 4 Processor 540 LGA775 3.2Ghz 1MB L2-Cache 800FSB

if someone could tell me if there is great deal of difference and why id greatly appreciate the help

get the pentium 4. pentium for has more processing capabilities than the celeron. you can think of it in terms of high performance and low end office machine.

P4 is high performance, celeron is medium or low end.

If you are going to do any gaming at all go with the Pentium 4. If you are just doing office work (typing papers, Internet, ect.) the Celeron would be O.K.

Cache really isn't that impotant...

A Webopeida definition:
Quote:
Pronounced cash, a special high-speed storage mechanism. It can be either a reserved section of main memory or an independent high-speed storage device. Two types of caching are commonly used in personal computers: memory caching and disk caching.

Cache is important. When you have a proc that can hold 512-2MB or more of stored data, instructions, etc on the CPU instead of either going to the RAM or HDD, that will save you a lot of time.

I have not been keeping up with the processors as much as I used to, I think I'll read up on the Celeron D sometime.

But, from what I know in the past, the celeron procs have less cache and I believe their hardcoded instruction set is different... I'll look into it and get back to you.

The Celeron D proc is basically a tweaked P4 Prescott processor, but with less L2 cache.

If your'e asking us which processor to purchase out of the selection you posted, the P4.

Amd or die! Check out an Amd 64 bit platform. If you're really looking to spend 300 on the cpu alone you will definitely get more bang for your buck with the Amd cpus. If you're sticking with Intel go with the 4. If you look at the Amd socket 939 3500 venice you can get it for 359. A little more than the Pentium but you get 64 bit OS support and a better highly overclockable cpu. If youre looking for the long haul and you got the cash get the amd. A 3000 can be had for 222. Great chip as well.

Idk i prefer amd now since i saw my friend with his Pentium 4 3.0ghz with HT and a Amd athlon 3000 and the 3000 seems to blow it away. Same amount n same exact ram in both of them. I do fine with my celeron. Does what i need it to do. Which is If your not doing anything to serious get a celeron.

oh my...

Like everyone else has said, don't cheap out on the processor, get a pentium 4 (or better and AMD!). That newegg one looks good, though I can't figure out why its so cheap... where do prescott procs fit in the range of low end to high end?

It seems to have good reviews expect for some problems with the heat sinkfan.
