pentium 4 vs celeron m

I have a desktop w/ a pent 4, 2.80 ghz cpu and 512mb ram and just got a laptop w/ a celeron m 1.30 ghz cpu also 512mb ram. now looking at cpus wouldnt the pent 4 be the work horse? but the celeron is pulling the same or more load and is'nt using but 15% of cpu where as the pent 4 is calling 85% to 100% to just launch a program. is this odd or is celeron just that good?

The P4 would blow away the Celeron.

Well you have to realize that the Pentium M is an entirely different processor architecture. Its designed to get as many instructions done with as few cycles as possible. The P4 is based on the 'Netburst' architecture. It has an extrememly long instruction pipeline so for doing things such as mathematical calculations its blazingly fast. However every time theres a 'branch' code, the entire pipeline has to be emptied. Multimedia absolutely trashes the current P4. Since theres so many branches in editing software its a mess.
So anyway,
the Pentium M is actually closely related to the Pentium 3.

The Penitum is designed differently as Josh said, and actually meets or exceeds the P4 in certain situations, this is why you have probably noticed that your desktop and your laptop are performing about thesame.

The celeron m is the same architecture as the Pentium M. The only difference is that its intentionly crippled-has less cache and slower FSB.
