[SOLVED] DMA controller failure

A Compaq P4 laptop running XP Home continued to play up after wiping
and reloading s/w, so h/w diagnotics were called for. HDD seemed OK re
bad sectors and SMART so MicroScope was used and among its systemboard
tests we're getting a consistent failure described as: "DMA #1
Controller Test: Register Test Failed". This is a coverdisc version of
MS with no online help. Looks to me like a new motherboard's the
likliest fix, though. Any dis/agreement?

I vaguely remembered failing to find much of use on the MicroScope
site previously but decided to have a look anyway and found the manual
for a later version that says this failure indicates a defective DMA
chip, so I guess that's that!
