OMG, i hate my comp.......
Ok, once again i'm having trouble with HDD. so heres the scooP: A couple of days ago i was just browsing the net when a caution symbol appeared in the tray (where the toime is) and a little message poped up saying some weird directory i've never seen or heard of, it said it had become corupt and that i should run chkdsk /F, at the same time a window poped up saying in order to remain stable i must insert the window xp disc. so i did, and not much happened. So i rebooted. So on startup it went in to the scandisk screen, except it says : "Drive C: need to be checked for consistency", and every time it finds a couple kb of data in a couple bad sectors. I'm not sure if it fixes it because it goes to fast and i dont have time to read the text ( is there scan disk log?). From there on it boots normally. I rebooted again except i booted of the windows disc and tried to do a repair installation, but it said it couldnt because disk C: is corrupt. About a day later i tried to install a prog in the Program Files directory and mid-installation the caution symbol appear again in the tray and says that the data cannot be saved in this location due to hardware or network connection failure, so i had to abort the installation. Today on the logon screen right after i had entered my password and selected "logon" and error message poped up saying "Delayed Write Failed" and that data was lost, among some of this data was " wbemess.log" and there were some other files. So is this a HDD issue meaning i should get a new one, or a windows inssue. Something telles me its the HDD becaus e of the bad sectors which it seems cant be repaired. Im running WinXp Pro on a 200GB Western Digital HDD. its done the check for consistency thing a few more times, and on other times it just freezes up. please help!

It could be a few things. I would whipe out your master boot record (fdisk /mbr) and do a low level format (you can get the tool from WD's site). Then create a couple of partions since your drive is huge.
What motherboard do you have? I would suggest upgrading the BIOS, be careful though. If you have an AMD board, get the latest chipset drivers (4 in 1). You could run a thourogh scandisk too, which will take a long time. |

Just make sure you have the right BIOS for the correct board. How did the scandisk go?

well unfortunately i've been trying to do a scan disk but now it goes to the windows loading screen and resets its self so i can't really logon. It does this in safe mode. It just resests its self right before the logon screen.

hmm that is interesting... you say it reboots in safe mode? i have never had that problem personally but i wou place my xp disk in the cd tray and reboot to cd rom and repair windows....but that will only work if you have a restore point i believe....or if some files are currupted, in which case you should be able to, so try that...then you should be able to boot the comp to get the bios upgrades and stuff. BE SURE TO GET THE RIGHT BIOS.

Once your logged into Windows with an account that has administrative rights, go to the command prompt and type chkdsik /F
Or make a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com and do a thourogh scan with it. |

ok, after finally getting around to what have suggested i have found that when i tell my comp to run chkdsk /f on the next start -up it doesnt it just goes straight to the logon screen. so i do the boot disk thing (its actually bootdisk.com, no "s") and the xp boot disk just loads drivers for your cd rom so you can install the os. i would test it out but it requires 7 disks! and i dont have that many.
