Quote:
No More Privacy For AOL Instant Messenger Users

At a time when privacy on the Internet is of the utmost importance to many people, AOL has added a new provision to their AIM Terms of Service contract. Of course, there is rarely a person that ever even reads these things, so here is the text:

Quote: ...by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy.

Source: http://www.gearlive.com/index.php/ne...sers_03120834/
i am not 100% sure on how legitimate this news is but i have not yet bothered checking the license agreement. but i am not taking any chances with this. the last line "you waive any right to privacy" really gets to me.

I don't care if someone reads my messages. Usually they are "hey, how's it going" "whatcha doin".
Nothing important.

but still, that sucks big time, people might as well shout their msgs with a loudspeaker across the city. This is a very bad move by AOL if it's indeed true.

I doubt AIM is going to post entire convos or anything at all. I don't think it's a big deal...

You can of course go into AIM's properties and enable encryption. That will secure your messages from most prying eyes.

I doubt using Trillian will solve the problem since you are still using AIM servers.

Think of the kind of traffic AIM generates a day. It's literally hundreds of gigabytes per day. There's no way they would spend the time and resources to record all that information and and sift each and every bit, day after day. They would garner very little, if anything at all.

the agreement stats that anything posted onto an AIM product can be freely used by AOL. trillian isn't an AIM product so that would not apply to it.

i am not too worried that they will read what i say, its just a privacy issue. its like having a private phone conversasion with a loved one and then having someone listen in on it. sure the person listening to it could gave a crap about what you are saying but the bottom line is, it wasn't a private conversation.

Using AIM protocols and servers is not an AIM product?
