Here's the initial setup:

This is fine - can connect to internet quiet easily. This isn't where the problem lies

The problem lies in with the Computer downstairs.

Windows 98 with a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter WG311 v 2.

This can connect to the wireless router very easily, and have a strong connection of 80%.

Problem lies in that I can't seem to get internet explorer/opera to detect that they should be connecting to the internet via the PCI Card, which is immensly annoying.

What should I be doing that I'm not?

Can't have USB and Ethernet active on the DSL modem at the same time. There in lies your issue.

So I can't have the modem connected to my computer via the USB port, and then connected to the Wireless router via the Ethernet port?

Strange, as I can connect to the internet on my brothers laptop using windows XP with the exact same setup.

USB takes priority over the Ethernet port on the ADSL modem. You cna only have one connection. I suggest Ethernet from the modem to the uplink port on the router, and then another Ethernet cable to the PC.
