Network adaptor "unplugged"

I have a linksy network adaptor that I've been trying to get to work on my step dads computer for awhile but the litte computer icon in the lower right hand side of my screen keeps telling me its unplugged! No matter how times I take it out and plug it in again with alittle more force, or put it in a differant USB port I still cant get it to work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled in twice now as well. I honestly havent the slightest clue what I should do now, I've posted on Yahoo ask and even there no one knew what to do. bleeeeh, please help heh.

Can you tell us more about the computer? What version of Windows are you running? and what are the specifications of the computer?

Its a Compaq presario, Im not sure the version its from 2003 and its running XP. Again its not my computer so I dont know a whole alot about it sadly. Anything else you would need to know I would have to ask or boot the machine up again.

Wait a minute, are you running the internet connection through a USB cable?

If you are, that may explain why. The computer isn't reading a signal from the ethernet port, this is why you are getting the "network adapter unplugged" message.

If there are no problems with your internet connection, I wouldn't worry about it. Just hide the icon so you don't have to see that message all the time.

Cabbageboy,
The reason you're seeing that 'unconnected network' icon is because you haven't joined a wireless network. Go into Control Panel, then into Network Connections. Double click the wireless adapter, select the wireless network you'd like to join from the list and click 'Join'. You may be asked for a password depending on your network security.

Thanks a lot Fenis-wolf! Wasn't exactly the problem but really darn close heh. My windows wireless zero configuration didn't start so it was just a matter of turning it on and then connecting to my network.

Much thanks Fenis-wolf, and alittle thanks to everyone else you tried <3

What happens with that is you installed the companies wireless management program in which disabled Windows native wireless settings.
