My Take on Windows Vista
Disclaimer: This is my review of the newly released OS. Please do not use this as reliable information. I am in no way affiliated with Microsoft or competing corporations.
Hello All, By now I think nearly everyone has seen a glimpse of the new OS including the general public since it is due for release in less than a week I think. Any way I have been through several versions so far. I started out with the Windows Longhorn 5xxx and then moved on to the Alpha releases and then the Beta releases and both the RCs. Through each step and phase the OS seemed to become more promising but the final result was quite disappointing. If you recall when Longhorn was originally released Microsoft claimed four new feautures. Avalon, a new interface later to be renamed Aero, WinFX and the New Indexing system or WinFS, as I recall. They also boasted that there will be new security features and a more stable system. The only thing they really did not accomplish was the WinFS filesysetm extension which is planned to be realeased with BlackComb. Any way, all of these new feauters sort of just made this new OS foolproof, if anything and basically limit the customization abilities of computer savy people(although not for too long I assume LOL). This new OS does not really boast any "new and never before seen" features. For example feautres of the new Aero interface were always available for previous OSes via 3rd party software such as Windows Blinds. The side bar or widgets were available through Yahoo! Widgets or Google Sidebar. Many of the transparency affects and 3D affects were integrated into desktop systems for Linux such as KDE, the most resource taxing (hey, like Windows) desktop environement created for the UNIX OS and sub parties. New security and reilabilty features have been available by the less mainstream OSs such as Mac OS X and Linux Kernel 2.4 and onwards. I cannot say if Microsoft has cleaned up there coding or not since there Kernel is closed source, but I can tell you that through atleast several months of usages, if many bugs appear in the system we will know that Microsoft has returned to there well-renowned system of fogetting to profred there code. Also using the actual final release through non-disclosed sources, I can tell you that it still has many incompatibilites. Ther great graphical features on Vista raped my laptop battery for about half the life time. So here is my verdictWindows Vista is great for the average user. It is foolproof and fully integrated with all the right features to allow for the least amount of possible in compatibilities that occur from third party and poorly written software...not that Microsoft is completely innoncent. My suggestions: -If you are well experiences enough with computers and have a finally tuned Windows XP system, do not and I repeat do not buy into Windows Vista for atleast six months until they discover some flaws and bugs which I am sure they will, its really nothing special, just really eye appealing, especially if you own a laptop! -If you are just hearing about computers right now than this OS is for you -If you get a free upgrade go for it but to be honest with you its not worth it unless you get the Buisness or Ultimate version which I hear retail for about 200 +, yikes! |

I take it that Windows Vista isn't quit the revolution it was supposed to be, like Windows 95 was 13 years ago?
Disappointing Microsoft - I expected better. Especially for the price you're charging.

Hey, once again that is my opinion so I suggest you still try it out. I think Microsoft is offering a 60-day trial version or something of the sort like they do with most of their software.
Also my review applies to the highly advertised "Office 2007 System" which by the way is just a really pretty version of Office 2003. Maybe it might be better for Workgroups but as a personal user I was not impressed with the basic applications. I saw very few new feautres, only a different layout for the program and new eyecandy making it more resource intensive, and also the ability to same into XML format or PDF format which was already present in OpenOffice.org system! Actually it has some incompatibilities with legacy Hp Printers aswell and some recent ones for that matter. |

I don't see the next revolution until someone comes out with a computer that looks like the one from "Minority Report".
Hated the movie, but I want the computer interface that they have

I would suggest that you break up your text into more paragraphs as it's easier to read. From what I did read, I honetly don't agree with your statements. I suggest that you download the free Windows Vista Product Guide and read about the under the hood features / user features as it's very detailed.

I would have to agree with James, that in fact there are a lot of things that most users will not notice that are huge improvements with the OS.
Oh and yes it will cut your laptops battery life in half WITH power settings set to be efficient.

I don't like Vista.
I have a fast PC, with plenty of RAM and Vista runs dog slow on it. Windows 2003 and Windows XP screams. I have no intention of upgrading, and will be sticking with my Mac. Especially considering all the nice features of Vista have existed in OS X since like 10.2. :-) /smug Mac user |

No, my 'fast' PC is an Athlon 64 3400+, with a gigabyte of RAM and almost a terrabyte of drive space connected via SATA.
Frankly, after running Windows Server 2003 on there everything feels slow. I'm thinking about trying to use Bootcamp to install Vista, but I'm not all that interested. The University isn't too excited about upgrading to Vista and is pushing it off, so I'm content to put it off. |
