modem not being detected

A friend of mine has a computer that has windows xp professional installed on it. The computer was given to him the original problem showed a modem that had a yellow circle with a black mark inside the yellow circle next to the modem. I went to a forum I don't remember which one but someone replied that I was to uninstall the modem. With out taking the modem out, and reboot the computer I did that and now the computer does not detect any modem it makes me choose from a list how do I know the right one. The computer was built so it has no brand name on it what do I need to do to help my friend? I am using a public computer to post my question so I can not download anything and my friend does not want to take the modem out of the computer unless it is absolutely necessary we can not afford to buy a new modem. what can i do to get my friend connected to the internet? it is an internal modem any help would be appriciated i have to use a public computer to ask for help.

Unfortunately you're going to have to take the modem out and look for identifying markers. Or you could call the person who built the computer and see if they remember what model modem was installed. Typically the yellow circle in Device Manager means that Windows doesn't have the correct driver loaded. If you find out what modem is in the computer, we can help you find the correct driver download.

it is relatively easy to take the modem out, just be sure to not poke anything too hard, and dont force it out too hard either. Oh, and be aware of static, thats the most important thing

After having read that thread you linked to, I am initially advising against opening the computer, since it seems you have not ever done that before. True, it's easier and much faster to detect your modem by just opening the case and looking inside, but if you don't know what you're doing and have not ever done anything with computers - hardware-wise - then I am not eager to suggest that you open up someone else's production machine without trying alternative solutions first.

Try the following:

1. Go to this website and click on the big button on the right that says "Click here to download..." Save this file on a floppy or CD and take the file to your friends computer.
2. Run the file on your friends computer and wait for it to finish doing what it does. If it asks you about updating or security patches just select No. It wants to update itself but since the computer isn't connected to the Internet, it's a moot point to try.
3. Once the program has finished it will present you with a page full of information. The page will be opened up in a web browser (the file is stored locally, it's not online.) Go to the browser's File menu and Save Page As or Save As... or similar option to save the page in its entirety to a floppy or CD or some other portable media. Select .TXT as a format rather than HTML if possible. But either will work. In addition, print the page out (as a backup) if possible.
4. Get back to us and post the contents of the page Belarc produced. It may not include your modem's information for various reasons, but it'll hopefully provide us other information to go on with.
