versitile backup

Recently a friend of mine lost his iphone to accidentally falling in a
lake, and a big part of his loss was his contacts, most of the names and
numbers weren't backed up.

That got me to thinking what would happen if I lost mine, and led me to
the conclusion that the only way of backing up my contacts was through
backing up the whole phone through itunes.

Though if I choose to not get an iPhone next time, I do not have an easy
way to get my contacts in there. So I'm thinking, what is an easy way
to export or back up my contacts into an other format on my computer.
Somthing that I could do something with, such as comma delineated text
or an excel file, or something like that?

sync it with google.

If you had a Mac, each time you would sync the iPhone, your contacts would
sync with the Mac OS X Address Book. Maybe there's something similar for
Windows.

i think it syncs with outlook on windows.

that won't work because he wants to keep his options open in case he
doesn't get an iphone. if he stays with the iphone it would.

Because he hasn't synced in a couple months, and he hasn't got a
replacement phone yet.

Well, a big problem for me is now: I don't have a Mac. I don't have
outlook.
