It is inconsistant.
I upgraded both an iPad2 and a iPhone 3gs via iTunes and it came up short on
a couple.
Both were set up the same way, they had 6 mail accounts (all imap) on 6
different providers, on both devices 4 of the 6 accounts transfered/updated
just fine.
On the iPad2, one of the accounts (ameritech/yahoo) it didn't keep or
transfer the password, so neither the inbound or outbound mail worked. Had
to put it (the password) in manually via settings.
On the iPhone, that same account was able to receive mail, but like you, it
didn't set the password for outbound mail, even though it was the same
password/login as for the imap.
On another account, the iPad imported everything fine but that account on the
iPhone didn't catch the password at all like the ameritech one on the iPad.
That too had to be put in manually via Settings.
Seems strange to me, if they all failed it would make sense that something
is wrong. It getting the inbound to work and not the outbound when the
settings are the same is even stranger. And both getting 4 out of 6 with no
problems at all.
Weird.
