So far, I've tried it with another computer login, I've tried deleting
the 'iTunes Library.itl' file and re-importing the 'iTunes Music
Library.xml' file per Apple Support and I've tried uninstalling/
reinstalling iTunes.
The other login appeared to work as it should. Neither the reinstall
nor the deletion/recreation of the library fixed anything.
So it's not the +install+ of iTunes, per se, but rather something in my
computer login profile.
This may or may not be a coincidence, but occasionally my wallpaper
will fail to load when I start my computer, and the wallpaper manager
will complain about a missing config file, and often my Logitech
keyboard/mouse driver will have corrupted settings.
I've also eliminated my antivirus as being the problem by turning it
off while using iTunes in such a way that the temp files are known to
be created.
Oh, and these temp files are copies of the "iTunes Music Library.xml"
file.
