Greetings,

Here in the UK, they are advertising on television the iPhone 4S as
having the ability to show where others (I presume that they also have
iPhones) are located on a map in real time. Does anybody know what that
feature is called and how it is used?

Thank you.

In the U.S. it's called "Find iPhone." Obviously, you can't track just
any iPhone. You can find iPhones that are on the same iCloud account
that you are on and whose users have allowed (enabled) finding. As a
practical matter, that means that you may track family members if they
wish to allow it.

Cooperatively, use an App like Glympse. The person being located runs
the App and sets the duration of the broadcast (15, 30, 45 ... minutes).
Can broadcast to selected e-mail addresses or phone numbers.

It's voluntary on the part of the person who wants to show his/her location.

I use this when meeting people downtown or at trailheads.
