Anyone here buy one?

I love the technology and new ideas! However, I would never buy a phone if I couldn't replace the battery (or buy a battery on eBay).

My hope is that the iPhone will raise the bar on future cell phones.

I think that the touchscreen will go out on the phone first. Just a couple of drops and phttttp.

A friend of mine got one, and we've been playing with it at work. It's very nice, I have to say, but I couldn't own one. Here's why:
  • $600 is too much for a phone for me, even if it does all the extra stuff
  • You can't enter unique IP or DNS information on the Wi-Fi settings, so you may be out of luck at some hot spots
  • The ringtones suck, and not being able to use songs on the phone as tones is kind of messed up.
  • There is no Flash or Java, so web browsing is somewhat limited
  • The settings menu is organized very weirdly
  • The headphone jack is indented, meaning that no angled plug and most straight plugs won't work without Apple's adapter, which is itself kind of bulky
  • It doesn't come with a sleeve, only a cloth. I guess that's to wipe the drool off your mouth, because I've found no other use for it.
  • You can't download images or sounds from the web onto the phone, you have to send them to yourself.
  • No games and no video camera.
  • I wish I could buy music right from the phone, perhaps they will add this later.
On the flip side of this coin, there are several things I really like:
  • The phone has a good feel, not too light, but not too heavy.
  • The screen seems very durable and scratch-proof. We haven't intentionally dropped or scratched it or anything, but the iPhone performed well in PC World's stress tests, in which they tried to scratch the screen.
  • It doesn't smudge very easily, which is great, because if you're touching it all the time, that cloth might have become a necessity.
  • The calls sound good, and the microphone works well.
  • The display is BIG, which is good if you're watching a video.
  • Web browsing works very well, and the multi-touch interface is very conducive to a good web experience.
  • It's pretty small. Compared to my SLVR L7, the iPhone is about the same height and thickness, with the width of an iPod, a very good size.
  • Typing with the keyboard is fine. I've had no problems that anyone has talked about with touching the wrong keys or anything.
  • The phone is fast, and has nice transitions between screens.
  • The camera takes very decent pictures, especially with the right light
All in all, if you're willing to spend the money for the iPhone, it's well worth it. True, you will have to get a new plan, but if you're willing to do that, then go for it. I think it would be a great investment if you're interested, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for this gadget.

EDIT: Here's the video of PC World's stress tests.

Its a waste of money IMO. $600 for a phone that lacks functions that even my lowly moto razr has. All you are paying for is the apple logo and the pretty design.

I'd would rather drop a little more money for a much more functional phone like the Nokia N95.

I just don't understand the attraction of such a phone; my cell phone handles calls and that's it, I don't want to text message, send photos, watch videos, etc on my phone. $600 for a phone is outrageous, even if you can do the things it claims... The Xbox 3600 Premium is $400, look at what an Xbox can do compared to the iphone and it costs less.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like being tethered to something all the time- it's great for emergencies and what not but when I'm kayaking, hiking, etc I don't want to be bothered unless it's an emergency. I suppose for someone who really wants to be connected such a phone would be a delight but from my point of view I personally do not find it necessary.

I agree. I want a phone to make phone calls and do text messages, and that's pretty much it. A camera doesn't hurt, but I too don't need all the features of the iPhone.

No. I already own a phone.

I use it to make phone calls. Period.

I would buy one if I had AT&T.
499 is not bad for a smart phone-decent Windows Mobile devices are in a similiar price bracket. The ability to condense my iPod and phone into one is a real benefit as well.
I think the iPhone sets the way for phones going forward.

iPhone $499
Blackberry $100-$400

Usually Blackberries in the $300-$350 price range does nearly everything the iPhone does (less the touchscreen).

I use my cell to make phone calls which usually runs around free-$50 with the phone plan.

I recently bought a Sony Erricson k750i, and that does all that I need, I really wanted a phone with a video/stills camera in it, and it has internet, mp3/mp4 player, FM radio etc... so I dont really need a phone that does more.

But I can see the novelty value in the iPhone, I just dont think I need one
