Deleted from iBooks: how to restore

Opened iTunes, went to books, dragged in a PDF file like I have done
many times before. Did a Sync, then tried to look at it on the iPad.
All the pages except the first were blank. Preview says they are OK,
iPad says they are blank.

So I used PDFTK to repair the PDF file (and remove a few truly blank
pages also) but iPad still showed all blank. Not being certain whether
the second sync had actually copied over (iTunes status window said
nothing about copying books), I deleted it from the iPad and then tried
to sync.

iTunes did not restore it. So I also removed it from iTunes, changed
the file name and touched the mod date and dragged it in again. iTunes
did not transfer it to the iPad.

Finally, I deleted it again from iTunes, used PDFTK to re-write it with
a different page order to a different filename, and dragged that back
into iTunes. Sync STILL doesn't transfer it!

HOW do I get this #$%&^$^& PDF onto the iPad?

(No, I can't re-download it from ITMS; it didn't come from there.)

I have no suggestions, but I'm curious to learn what suggestions others
come up with, as I have LOTS of pdfs in. iBooks myself!

Well, here's how I solved my problem (YMMV):

I was trying to get it on the iPad so that I could read it while waiting
for the doctor. Finally, I gave up and went to the doctor (and
surprisingly, no wait!)

When I got home, I tried another trick: Open the latest version that
failed to sync in Preview, select Print, and Save as PDF with yet
another filename. Drag that into iTunes and sync. Voila! iTunes
copies over this file AND the one that it refused to do earlier!

By the way, the "Save as" PDF is _four_ times the size of the file
Preview was saving!

I never use itunes for that. I always email the PDF to myself. Then
open it on the iPad which asks me what app to open it in.

Interesting. I avoid Preview as much as possible myself; I have better
programs for most of its functions.

It would be an alternative, since you can save from it to somewhere else as
well. Another would be ReaddleDocs.
