I recently was given an ancient laptop. For what I need it for, it's fine. It has Windows 95 and I think 12 MB of RAM.

The problem is, it has a very old version of IE on it that doesn't support JAVA at all. I spent about two hours looking for any new version of IE or any other browser that will work with the system I have, but I came up empty. It won't load most webpages properly in the state it's in.

Can someone point me in the right direction? There has to be something I can use.

Java support doesn't come natively with a browser...well, IE anyway. Or are you talking about javascript? Either way, your best bet is using a light browser such as a Mozilla-variant, Firebird maybe, and downloading Java platform from Sun. Just MO, someone might have a different approach.

While I personally prefer IE, it's not the lightest browser around.

I definitely need something that's not too cumbersome on the system - or too big. I have less than a gig on that thing. Basically, I want to use it as a word processor, but there's no floppy drive on it, so I need to be able to upload stuff.

I can manage the javascript okay, but I'm getting other errors when dealing with it.

I miss the days when webpages were simple. I really do. But that's probably just me.

Yeah. Nowadays just to be able to browse most common sites you need Flash plug-ins and whatnot. It's crazy.

Which version of IE do you have/have you tried?

IE 3.0 is on there now - the very first version of it.

I was looking for IE 5.01, but I can't find the dumb thing for download anymore because Microsoft is staffed by ********. They only have 6.0 for download, but I think that's just for 2000 or XP.

I think I'd like to get away from IE on this machine, though. The program is just too big.

Tucows has a lot of browsers available for download. Some are shareware, some commercial, some completely free. Next to each product it should say whether it is compatible with 95. There's no guarantee, for example, it says Mozilla Firebird is compatible with 95, while on the Mozilla site they say it requires 98 or up. The best way is to just give it a try.

Here: http://www.tucows.com/web95_default.html

Please read product description prior to downloading, as some browsers aren't real stand-alone browsers, but require IE.

You can get Sun's Java platform from http://java.sun.com/j2se/desktopjava/jre/index.jsp

According to the site it supports IE & NS from 3.x up, and also Win95.

IE 6 only works on 98 and up. MS doesn't offer IE 5 for download anymore. You'd have to do a search for IE5 for Windows 95. Firebird will work in 95 even though Mozilla doesn't list it as a supported OS.

Maybe you should consider upgrading the hard drive and memory. You probobly wouldn't have to put that much money into it. In the future you could then get XP!
