If you use the FTP protocol, read this

So how many of you access your forums/website via FTP?

Now how many of you access your forums/website via Telnet?

Of those who use FTP did you know that the standard FTP protocol has the same weaknesses as the Telnet protocol. Namely it transmits your password in plain text over the Internet. Did you realize that this it probably the largest hole in a site's security today?

Now, I can here you saying "How do you update your files?". Simple, I use SFTP. This is a secure protocol which encrypts the password before transmission and requires a public key to do so. The key was only transmitted once (the first time you log in) and then stored on your machine. This means that you do not need to submit the key every time you login and the login transmission only has a portion of the needed information. This allows my server to be more secure and since it uses the same technology behind SSL and SSH.

WS-FTP, FileZilla, and most common programs support SFTP.
