hotmail issue

hi, i hope this theread is in the right section. if not, my apologies. i am having a problem with my hotmail. about a week ago my computer stopped giving me notification that i had a new message. the new emails are going into my hotmail inbox but i am not being notified any more. i went into my messenger and made sure that the boxes were checked to give me alerts when a new message arrived and the settings were ok. i went to control panel and sounds and it looks okay there. i dont know alot about computers so i dont want to get myself into more trouble. i would sure appreciate any and all help i can get. i have a dell e520 desktop with windows xp. thank you for any and all help

When you sign into MSN Messenger, does it give you any error messages? The second question is, are you sure you're signed into MSN Messenger?

hi, yes i'm using the newest messenger and i do not get an error when messenger opens up. the sounds work when a contact signs in to messenger but the sound does not work when i recieve an email. i made sure the sounds were checked when i went in to tools, options, in messenger, if i am instant messaging with someone the nudge etc works the only thing that quit working is the email notification sound.

Does it still put up the little popup message that says you've received new mail?

hi, no the box that pops up to tell me i have new mail doesnt pop up any more

when a contact goes online the box is popping up to let show a contact signed in. i tried windows live mail and i have the same problem, i have tyhe same problem with outlook express and i downloaded yahoo messenger and i dont get a new mail notification with yahoo either. seems to me that something has gone wrong in my computer. i tried a system restore and i started from scratch and set everything back to the day i bought the computer. that didnt help either. i dont know what to check now.

This could be a total stab in the dark, but does anyone know if that new mail notification uses a certain port? It might be blocked by anti-virus or some mis-configured firewall.

I do know that there's bugs filed on connect.microsoft.com with latest version of WLM 8.5 on this issue, it will be resolved in the next release. I periodically experience this as well.
