Help me pick a digital camera

Hey guys. Going on holiday this summer and don't want to lug around a 35mm and all the extras so its time to buy a digital camera. I've always been partial to canon but am willing to look at sony or nikon as well or other if it's rated well. I want to spend around 200 and then get a 1gig sdcard. Whats the best bang for the buck? No lithium ion battery would be a plus too as I would like to stick with AA. Gonna go to Best Buy this weekend to handle some but your advice would be helpful.

Well, I dont know which camera is better than the next but I do know some. You really dont need the 6+ megapixel for realistic standards 3.0 to 4.0 is great, and when you get the AA, go for the rechargable, in the long run it will save you hundreds of dollars.

There are some good reviews on www.newegg.com, but take them with a grain of salt.

I highly recommend Digital Camera Resource Page to look at reviews and help you make your choice.

My sister has an Canon A520 and really likes it. I have used it a few times and it is a really solid camera. And for around $160 it is well within your price range.

most digital cameras i have found use AAA batteries.
My Jenoptic 3.2MP camera was £70, and that was 2 years ago now, they are fairly cheap now, with good quality

I have the Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 and it's great. I am actually trying to sell it for misc reasons. If you are interested, let me know.

Edit: Just remembered you said $200 is your limit...

Went to "Bust Buy" this weekend and handled some Nikons, Olympus, Canons and Kodaks. I really liked the price/features of the Nikons. The Canons were really nice but just too much out of my reach. I would have liked to see some Panasonics as I've been told they make some really nice digital cameras. I don't know what to make of the Sony Cybershot. One model had 3x optical and 6.0mp for 199. I'm a little leary of buying cameras from someone who doesn't just make cameras or optics. Anyone got any opinionos of the Sony's? Kinda would like image stabalization and a non lithium battery for the money. The A520 was nice just "fatter" than I really want.

Since you're not interested in my camera... I would look into the Canon S1 IS due to that fact that it has 12x optical zoom and image stabalizer, something you need for a zoom of that distance. It comes in very handy with my camera. Although I think the price is out of your range. The Nikon CoolPix model are very nice and come with excellent presets as well.

I have a sony DSC-H1. Although it is out of your price range, I love it. I have had nothing but great experiences with Sony Digitals.

Our school used to have a Sony Mavica which was very old. It had gone through a lot of abuse (a camera in a school with kids using it...) and it was still running strong after many years (5+ years). So I guess I can't say that Sony makes bad cameras.

Dave601, I've just noticed your avatar is from the film Office Space right? I like that film, that scene is of quite violent and horrific violence against a fax machine I beleieve
