Thinking of getting one of the above for my Media Centre but I'm torn which way to go?

Any help/opinions.

Cheers

I would wait to be honest, there is always the possibility of a dual format drive, but if not one format could become the Betamax of 2007 / 8 .......

you could always take the drive out of a Xbox360 HD addon, I believe they work in PCs, and at 110, not mega bucks if you have to go to blu-ray

I would buy neither at the moment to be honest. From a quality-of-product perspective HD DVD wins for me, but in terms of catalogue Blu-ray has the edge. The market will sort out things in 18 months or so and I would expect the technologies to unify/co-exist in the same way DVD-R and DVD+R did.

i've got a xbox360 hd dvd drive, but it just plugs into my xp pc and works if you use the relevant tosh driver / powerdvd 6.5 / anydvd software and decent vid card .... apparently it works great with vista and theres no need for extra software etc.

I'd advise against taking it out of its external shell, I think theres an extra bit of i/o in the case its self, tho I may be wrong on that ....

dixons were selling them last week for 99, I've had mine about 6 weeks and am well impressed.

Anyone know how much the blu ray laptop drive is roughly ? Was just curious now they've started selling them with the m1710 ...

ps ... MCE doesn't see the drive at all ... !

look at the first reply on the page I posted, it's a laptop connection, a 5 converter sorts that out I suppose it depends on whether you want it internal or another box hanging off the USB, as it's a media centre, an internal drive might be preferable (or not depends on personal preference I guess)

i didn't equate the laptop connection working on a pc ...

I wonder if M$ are planning to release anykind of update to allow xp MCE to actually see the drive / disk contents .... let alone play them - I can't find the drive to add to locations on MCE !
