i have a hard drive from a laptop that i took out, and want to erase everything off of it because it is unable to be formated, i looked up this kinda stuff on google to see if a magnet would erase or destroy, there were mixed opinions but some people said it would be destroyed so thats enough for me to not want to try... any other ways to clear it?

Is this the same HD from the laptop you were trying to format? Whatever you do, don't put a magnet on the HD.

The best and easiest way to format that laptop HD (since your laptop isn't working) is to use a Laptop Hard Drive Adapter IDC44F/IDC40M. Very cheap, and if you have a PC, just plug this in as a slave, and format it.

yea i read up on the magnet thing, sure it gets rid of data, but it also trashes the HD lol, i wasnt sure tho becuase i saw alot of stuff about people taking magnets to zip disks and them still being usable... cool ill look into that adapter for him. i think he is just considering buying a new HD and some ram tho because his current HD is only 6gb

Zip disks are made up of flimsy plastic type platters, so they aren't as fussy. Six GB is small. If he wants RAM, have him go to www.crucial.com, they have the best ram, and you can find your model motherboard/manufacturer to find the right RAM.

Wow, that's a hefty price for a car payment. How many years do you have to pay on that? Ubid has decent prices too. What are the specs for that laptop?

5 years. it started out as 457/month but the insurance provided by the loan agency is cheaper than the insurance i had, so now my insurance and car payment are all in the same bill which comes up to 722 and some change

on the laptop i dont have the page open anymore, but it had 128mb DDR, 2.0ghz celeron, 30gb HD, and generic video/audio, also comes with linux red hat, other OS's add money or you can choose for it to come with no OS and take 10$ off the price.

That's not bad then with the insurance and car payments bundled.

I would have no less then 256MB of RAM, if you can, get 512MB.
