hal.dll

Hey guys

its been rough day for me. Earlier my comp bluescreened and once I tried to reboot I got the message Win_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt: Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Well my first thought was to boot from my windows disc and see what I can do from there. Oddly enough though my disc never gives me the option to go to the repair console or anything. It just skips right to installing windows.

I put that aside for a moment and d/led the hal.dll file with this computer and booted my computer from ubuntu hoping to just copy the file into the windows directory. Now once in linux I realized ... the windows harddrive isn't even showing up and then thinking back ... it didn't show up when I booted from the windows disc either. So maybe the file isn't corrupted the drive is messed up (though I hope not its less than 6 months old).

I think I'm going to take it out and put it in my external case to see if I can access it through this computer. If you have an suggestions in the mean time I'd appreciate it! hehe

The harddrive is an 80gb SATA I western digital.

Well nvm. I put it in my external and it worked fine so I copied the file off my windows disc directly onto the harddrive and hooked it back up and everthing booted fine. I think the connections had just come loose when I opened the case thats why linux didn't see the harddrive. Its a good reminded of how badly I need a new case though, the windows harddrive is currently mere millimetres above the huge video card and the cables don't plug in real nicely .
