dvd-r burning speed affect lifespan?

Finally finished my wedding DVD. Been about 3 years in the making. Geez...

It's time to burn copies for the family, and I'm thinking about dvd-r longevity. Anyone had any experiences where the burn speed would make a difference in how long the disc remained readable?

I mainly use Taiyo Yuden's 8x dvd-r's, and have been very happy with them, but is there any reason to burn at a speed lower than that? I never really tried, thinking the discs were optimized for higher speeds.

Reason I ask is because of the playback problem I continue to have on discs that are 6+ months old.

I could get them to last until they get too scratched to work. So, I wouldn't know.

Well, practically any DVD I've burned that's older than 6 months has an 80% chance of not being recognized by either the PC or the standalone DVD player. Hence the question.

What condition are these DVDs in? I'm with Crimson, I have DVD-Rs that are 2+ years old that still work. Along those lines I have some CDs that are less than 6 months old that will only play in my computer now (music CDs have a rough life in my house).

Yeh I have a cd (dont know where it is) taht I bought 7+ years ago that still plays, its full of scratches. I have cds that I have burned 8+ years ago that work, and for as long as I have had my dvd burner all my dvds still play, 2+ years ago. Now of course some of them dont work because of my miss use but a little bit of tooth paste works like a charm, then I make an image an reburn the cd.

Mint condition. Only been tested after burn to ensure they worked, then shelved in jewel cases. Some have not been touched since, yet you put one in and 'no disc'.

I did some research and appears that certain generations of Ritek discs are known for very fast degradation. And those (4x & 8x) of RiData were precisely what I was buying in loads.

Here's hoping that when I start testing the Taiyo Yudens in a few months, they'll still work without issues.

this can happen sometimes if you buy cheap spindles of DVDs, I recommend getting the highest quality of DVD to use, as this has happened with some of my films I have put onto DVD

Core, I burn alot. I mean alot. We're talking 300-500 discs a month. Lots of times more. I use memorex, maxwell, staples brand, officedepot brand. I use - and +. I cant tell a differnce between the two. $ years ago yea there was some concern for the + working in dvd players. But now there is almost no issues andthe disc last a long time.
To answer your question I have'nt seen a problem with burning at the max. As you can guess I burn at the max everytime. I'm in the process of using bluray. I just dont have many customers that has the reading ability. But for now my blurays is just storage cabnets for lots of records.
