Drivers for external hard drive...

Hey guys,
For some reason, my Western Digital Passport drive said it was running from a slow USB port (which it wasn't), so I went into device manager and uninstalled the device. Now it when I plug it in, it only shows up as an unknown device. I tried Windows Updates and the manufacturer's website, but have not found whatever drivers it needs (when check it's properties in device manager, it says that no drivers are installed.)

Thanks.

Plug in the drive, go into Device Manager and under 'Tools' I believe select 'Scan for Hardware Change' this will force your computer to probe for new hardware. Barring that, go under Disk Management and see if your drive is there just not assigned a drive letter.

Sounds to me like you might have the wrong USB hub drivers on that port, or the drive you're plugging in is not USB 2.0 compatible (but I doubt that).

Hey guys,
Thanks for your responses. I don't seem to be having the problem I posted about anymore, but there is now a minor issue that's bugging me: This external drive (portable/bus powered) will randomly "autorun" as if it has just been plugged in. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Thanks.

No idea. But if you right click > go to properties > AutoPlay, you can set it to take no action.

I just worried that it was re-detecting it each time that happened, if that's not the case, I'm comfortable to just disable auto-play. Speaking of auto-play, though, how do I delete entries on the auto-play list? I tried a trial version of Nero 7 and after uninstalling it, the entires it made on the auto-play list are still there (minus icons).

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Like I said, I'm not sure why it would do that.

... I think you stumped me on the auto-play entry issue, too. Usually those entries go away so I've never had to remove them manually. I would assume it's in the registry somewhere.

/hate being stumped

Just a follow-up about defunct auto-play entries: I googled it and found this: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/AutoplayRepair.html which I scanned with AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware. It came up clean and McAfee site advisor green-lighted the site itself. I tried it out and successfully removed the annoying remnants and have had no problems, so far, from doing so. Hope this app will help anyone with similar problems.

Thanks again.
