I've just had a 1TB Samsung HD103SL fail in my Buffalo Terastation, put
another drive in and the array is re-building.

I'll test the drive with Seatools later and see what it says.

Anybody know where the Samsung warranty checker is nowadays, they seem to
have been taken over.

I had a WD 1Tb Green HD go on me after just 3 weeks not long ago, and I
had it replaced direct from WD

I've got something called ESTOOL which I think might be what you want.
IIRC it checks the disk drive and I did use it to pursuade Ebuyer that
the Samsung 1.5TB drive they sent me had failed perhaps a few days after
I purchased it.

If you send me an email I will try and send it to you.

It's on Seagate's site, Jeff. Just slam the details into the Seagate
warranty validation page and it should accept them.

Seagate borged Samsung, and WD borged Hitachi.

I've got one to go back too but haven't got round to it yet. What was
the turnaround time and did you have to pay the return postage?

I've still to check out the details for RMA.

What I did was to take it back to the place I bought it from , CCL at
Bradford, and they sent it back along with the RMA which I got from WD.
WD then sent a replacement 1TB Green HD back direct to me.

No cost involved at all, unless you count the cost of a gallon of deisel
to drive to CCL and back.

Thanks for the replies :-)

I installed Seatools, needed Net FW 4, installed that, Seatools still
didn't work, found another Net FW 4 - extended, Seatools installed then
crashed every time it ran. Lots of reports of this but no action apparently.

Down-loaded the DOS Seatools iso, burn it to a CD, booted from it but
monitor didn't like whatever resolution it was using. Turned off, found
another monitor, turned on, ran tests and the HD is, apparently, fine.

What a load of bollox, I think I've had it with computers!

Ah, mine's significantly older than a year so I'll prob have to go
direct to WD. Thanks for the info.

This is my tool of choice:

http://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/

(I realise the drive will need to fail maker's tests to qualify for
replacement, but at least you will know.)

Perhaps the fault is temperature-dependent, and will only show up in the
original enclosure? Anything in SMART?

Heh! We all get those days; mostly, we bounce back.
