desktop connection to solve software or problems with another persons comp,
whilst at home?

Is it graphical i.e does it give the other persons comp on screen.

Thanks

Heh! I thought it was a direct connection? comp to comp without the need for
anything in between.

It can be, but it can be instigated through Windows Messenger as well (not
MSN).

It can be blocked by Windows Firewall or your router so check out the
required ports on both computers. It helps a little if you use a higher
screen resolution than the remote computer.

What do people think about a Windows enhanced version of VNC (I use
UltraVNC, which offers chat mode and file transfer) as compared to
Remote Connect?

Remote Desktop Connection seems faster/smoother than VNC.

It is. VNC has to spot changes in the screen bitmap after the fact,
then package and send those bitmaps. RDP hooks into the Windows
display mechanisms, so whenever something changes only the change is
sent. I think it caches window elements, icons and whatnot, so they
don't need to be sent again. VNC is necessarily more brute force.

Far more useful when you've got a heterogenous bunch of kit, though -
RDP is Windows only.

There's one fairly major difference between Remote Desktop and VNC.

With RDC all the 'action' i.e. sound etc. takes place on the host PC,
with VNC it takes place on the target PC.

If you were running/testing a Media Center PC VNC is better because it
plays back through the sound system of the target rather than the host.
