Connectivity issue?

Hi! I'm running into an issue with Windows XP, and I'm hoping someone can help me out with it.

Last night I enabled Windows Firewall, for added security. But now there's an icon in my status bar that says "Local Area Connection: Limited or No Connectivity." Now, I don't really understand this, because I can connect to the internet just fine (obviously, since I'm posting this message). But of course, just because I haven't run into any problems YET, doesn't mean that I won't. Knowing me, and my past with this computer, I probably WILL end up having problems.

Anyway. Does anyone know if this is going to cause me major grief --- or if I can just ignore it? If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to toss them my way.

I'm assuming this is a wireless connection?

Actually, no, it's not! I wish. lol. Nope, just a plain old DSL connection. Actually I can't even figure out why it's an issue, since my computer isn't on a network, so....I don't know. It's weird as ****.

Any other ideas?.....

So how is your internet connection setup? Do you have a router, or just a modem that connects directly to your computer?

Modem. Connected directly to my computer. ) Like I said, not part of a network, so I don't understand this.

the windows firewall is nothing but trouble. i find it quite annoying. since you have no hardware firewall, i would use a different software firewall. i heard "zonealarm" is a pretty good firewall.

When I try to repair the connection, I get the following message:

"Windows is taking the following step: Renewing your IP address." Then it tries for a few minutes and then I get this message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address."

Bah! What now?

Well, Windows Firewall should not be doing this. If you disable it, does this message go away? How is your modem hooked into your computer? USB or Ethernet? Do you SP2 installed? If not, what SP do you have installed? Also spike has a good question on how many NICs you have.

Limited or no connectivity

Several people were having the same problem when connecting to the X-box. They said it had something to do with SP2. I have heard only bad things about SP2. Even with a direct link cable you can not transfer songs to the X-box. Crazy.
