They don't chirp continually.....

I agree - and quite often, because it's an infrequent short chirp,
it's sometime very difficult to detrmine the source or direction.

In spades with smoke detectors that are in boxes and not installed on the ceiling |-)

Only an absolute dickhead like Rod Speed would install smoke detectors in
their original boxes and not mount them on the ceiling.
