I found this on an old hard drive I was throwing
out. I'd never seen a part like this before so
can someone help ID this for me.

It looks like a brass bolt as it's got a screw
thread but it has at one end a pair of wires
ending in a plug and at the other a plastic
washer around what looks like a metal electrode
coming out of the end.

As these groups do not do attachments I'll send
the pic to my web space

Some sort of sensor? Reminds me a bit of an oil pressure sensor in an old
car of mine (OK, not that much but I'm thinking outside the box)

Mike.

A bit hard to tell from the pic, but my guess is that it's a temperature
sensor. Unless that little metal bit on the end moves, in which case I'd
peg it as a micro-switch.

I'll go for temperature sensor too. What sort of drive, John?

Looks like the track 0 sensor.

The head carraige is driven to the stops until the
drive indicates its got to track 0, and that looks
like the sensor that determines its got there.

They do actually, but some new server bin post with them.

It's magnetic sensor.

In old hard disk drives, it was normally used to generate a spindal
pulse. I've got some old hard disks here and they look identical.

What's a spandal pulse?

I have been told it's also possibly a temperature sensor
