Computer not starting up.

This morning I put my computer in hibernation for a while, then came back to it and hit the power button. The fans spun up, I got a post beep, but the fans didn't slow down as they usually do, and nothing turned up on the monitor. The monitor was plugged in, I wasn't getting the no signal message, just black. I opened it up, took out the two sticks of RAM (two 512, two one gigs still in the righ) that have caused this trouble in the past, but still nothing. This time though, I got a rhythmically blinking HDD light.
So, any ideas?

What do you mean by a blinking HDD light? You're not getting any POST beeps or anything? Just a blank screen? Have you tried unseating and reseating everything?

First off, if you ever get this fixed, disable auto hibernation and NEVER put it into hibernation manually. Windows is known to have problems with with the hibernation process. I'm not sure why it was never fixed but it has never worked, ever, in my personal experience.

Anyways, if you are able to reach the post screen, boot into safe made and try to restore your computer to a time before you set it to hibernate.

Alright, got it fixed. Had to reseat the RAM and graphics card. Thanks for the tip about hibernation spike, it's worked just fine for me for a while, but disabling it seems prudent.

Oh this isn't on a laptop? I have no idea how it works on a desktop. I've dealt with numerous problems with hibernation on windows laptops. I've never thought of hibernating a tower before.

Glad you got it fixed.

As with Spike, I have had so many issues with desktops and laptops in sleep mode. If there is a bad sector on the hdd that Windows writes all the RAM info to, good bye to all unsaved info, etc.

Hibernation has never worked reliably for me, on desktop or laptop. Ends up requiring a cold reset usually.

Sleep mode depends on the machine. I had huge problems with my laptop's sleep mode when I first got the machine as it came with Vista and it just wouldn't sleep normally. Once I swapped OS to XP, I've had zero problems...works beautifully, goes to sleep in a couple of seconds and wakes up fast. I don't allow it to do it automatically though (has to be triggered by closing lid or selecting from power down options.)
