College

Well one more month and I'm out of high school for good, which means I'm going to have to find a summer job and prepare for college. Part of me is really excited and part of me isn't looking so forward to it. Everything I'm going to leave behind and I know this is typical to feel this way and that everyone eventually leaves the nest but that really is of no comfort to me. So, for all of you grads and pre-grads out there, whats the general consensus of college? Compared to high school how much more difficult is it? How hefty is the work load? (I know it can depend on what you take for courses, but generalize) Many people have told me that they get a new found motivation and they don't dread doing the work, it's enjoyable *gasp!*. I was also told that if you just attend class, listen, do the reading and study that college will be a breeze. Unfortunately I can procrastinate severely and I'm worried it's going to get me in trouble in college, but maybe I won't have this problem there, who knows. So anyone got any words of wisdom? I'm going to University of Oregon in Eugene and I'm looking into their multimedia program or fine arts, I'm not entirely sure at the moment.

Right now it seems as though college is scary and important (which it is important), but after college, landing a good job, paying apartment / house bills, etc on your own is even worse.

I went to a tech. college so it's different then a Uni. You just have to stay focused on the work (it's hard, I know) and remember that your preparing your self for the your next step in life.

It's all so overbearing. The thought of the consequences of screwing up big time is what really scares me.

It's tough. Everybody makes mistakes though. Just learn how to deal with them in a positive way.

For the most part, I like college. I can't say I really enjoy the company of my fellow peers, but that is just how I am. The work load totally depends on the student. Atleast in my case. If you keep up with your work, you'll have maybe 1 hour per class of homework, sometimes less depending on your professor. That is if you keep ontop of your work load.

If you think about putting an assignment off it may help you to remember that you are paying for this class, so if you fail, it comes out of your pocket. That would be motivation enough for me!

Taking notes for every class is a really good idea, make sure you write down the things your professor tells you will be on a test, or if they tell you to remember something. Also, it's good to review your last class's notes a few minutes before you have that class again. That way you can remember what was discussed last time if the professor decides to review (they like to do that).

Example: Last week I took notes during Intro to Health Care, I now have the class in 10 minutes so I'll go to the class room early and review my notes from last week. Or, maybe the class room is full, so I'll go to the library or lobby for a while.

Hope I helped some.

You did Kristi, you too James, thank you both. One of the other things that bothers me is that I am going to a different college than all of my friends. Of all the people in my senior class only like two or three are going to UO (and I'm not really social with any of them), so I'm going to miss my closely nit group or friends very much. Thankfully, the college they are all going to is 45 minutes away from UO, so I'll still get to see them once in a while. I still can't decide whether or not I'm going to get a job or not durring school.

@Gump: Thankfully my uncle attended UO and he says that they predominately have a very friendly and dedicated staff, so chances are good I'll get some good professors.

This isn't really true. You haven't experienced college yet and once you do, I'm sure your opinion will change. Most professors do care about their students, some don't. I've had a little of both, but so far the good outweighs the bad. I've had 2 professors out of 8 who told us that they don't care if we leave early without a reason & don't care why we missed a class. It's not that they don't care about us and how we do in their class, because they did, but they didn't care as to why we missed a class, had to leave early...etc...

Most professors don't care what you do, as long as you get your work done and don't miss too many classes. If you miss a lot of classes and don't pass in much work, they go to your guidance councelor/advisor and let them know.

So please, don't make judgement calls based on what you've heard. Wait until you experience it. It's different for everyone.

Some advice I'd like to give, not that you have to take it or that you may not know already. Since you are 18, I would recommend getting a checking account and a CC. Use the CC to buy small things and pay the bill off when you get the bill, not 30 days after. Doing this will really help you establish good credit for when you need it such as a loan for a car, or even more, a house.

Starting out at your age is a really good idea, you just have to be responsible on your spending / saving habits.

Yea, I've heard opening a checking account is a really good idea, and I've heard getting a credit card, but I never really knew why I should need a cc. Getting one to establish good credit is a really good idea, it'll help me in long run. So I'll probably ended up getting both.
