Cleaning laptop
What's a safe solution you can use to clean the surface parts (around the kb and monitor) of a laptop?
It's gathered some dust and I want to get rid of it, but I'd prefer something we have on hand rather than buying some special product.

Air duster and a VERY damp cloth using water.

Ritz camera also has microfiber cloths for $5 that work very nice for getting rid of dust/fingerprints. I guess that is an example of buying special product, but I thought I should let you know anyway.

Microfiber is ideal. You can also use a 50/50 isoproply alcohol/water solution to clean off that hard to get grit. There are some companies that make cleaning solution, but most of them are a 50/50 solution from above.
Do not use Windex (ammonia based products), alcohol, or paper towels. Isoproply alchohol is different from other alcohol based products. Ammonia will yellow the display along with drying out the plastic that will eventually make it crack. Alcohol will remove anti-glare and gloss finishes from monitors. And with paper towels, tissues, coffee filters, etc, will scratch the surface of the monitor.

I also have these Zeiss lens cloths that have isopropyl alcohol in them (don't know the concentration) and according to the package are good for monitors too and not just glasses. However I haven't tried these on the laptop monitor since the laptop monitor isn't made of glass... In fact I am not sure what these laptop monitors are made of these days but it's an interesting plastic-y material.

Safest thing for a laptop monitor is just plain old water. I've found that anything other than water will cause streaks (this applies for any LCD monitor). Water works the best, just make sure you dry it off. As usual, don't use a dripping wet cloth.
