Celeron D Temperatures?

I've just built a new PC for a friend but am a bit jubious about the operating temperatures of the processor. As soon as I first fired the computer up, everything worked perfectly but the processor was already at 60C (in the BIOS), and then went up to 63C.

It seemed to be controlled - over a while it didn't go above 63C so I carried on to install the machine.

I'm just a bit worried about the temperature - I know P4's can operate at stupid temperatures - is it the same with the Celeron D?

The processor is a 2.53Ghz Celeron D which has 256kb cache and supports EMT64. If my memory serves me correctly the FSB is 133Mhz and Multiplier is 19. You probably don't need to know this, but it's best if you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I must admit I didn't clean the thermal pad from the heatsink (and use my own compound), I just used the supplied pad - I thought it would do the trick - is this letting me down?

Thanks
--James.

That is quite high for that processor, 67C is as high as it will go. I would first suggest that you make sure the cooler is properly seated on the processor and if it is I would definitely consider buying some decent thermal paste and getting rid of the thermal pad.

Celerons (socket 47 are suppose to operate more like a Northwood core (temp wise) for the P4 series. I would assume the Celeron D would be very similar to its predisessors. Temps in the 40C range are to be expected.

@Dave - I am going to re-seat the heatsink and fan today, and apply some proper compound. Cheers.

@Goober - It's an LGA775

Yeh I know its a 775 and I meant to say 478. I have yet to actually come across a 775, thats why I said I would assume.

Ah ok - I re-read your post now and I get it. xD.

I re-seated the HSF, cleaned the processor and put some more evenly spread thermal compound on. Now the processor won't go above 39C. Thanks for all your help guys.
