CD's won't function!

Everytime I load a CD into my disk tray it sounds like it's loading, but then it fails. Does anyone have any suggestions that could possibly resolve my problem?

1. is the CD lens dirty?
2. have you enabled autorun?
3. is the CD copied? if so, what format is it, and what type of data is on there?

I've tried multiple CD's with the same results. I went into device manager to verify the auto run feature but it doesn't show the CD ROM device category. It only appears in safe mode.

Edited to say: Also, when I click on my computer when I load a CD into the disc tray, the D:\ doesn't show as usual with a working CD.

That sounds like the drive either died, or the cable is loose on the back. Check for a loose cable first, and then try to replace the drive.

Well, I booted into safe mode and deleted everything associated with the CD ROM in device manager hoping that it would reinstall on boot. It didn't work. Now I can't even locate the CD ROM in device manager.

Also, when I click on run and type D:\ when I have a CD in the tray it says...

'D:\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, on a network, or on a different computer on your home network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or home network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.'
