CD-Drive isn't working
My computer can't use my DVD-ROM Drive nor my DVD+RW Drive. The reason is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". when I unistall and reinstall the drive, it says the same thing during the installation: "An error occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly."
My DVD+RW Drive is called an "_NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A" and my DVD-ROM is a "LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163." Both of these came with my computer when I recently bought it, which is a: Dell DIMENSION DIM4550 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz 2.66 GHz 512 MB of RAM And the system is: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 1 This just happened one day and ever since then I haven't been able to use my drives. Would someone please help me with this problem? |

Hi, do you have a drivers and resources CD? If so, pop that in and go into Device Manager then properties of one of the drives and update the drivers, try pointing it to the CD or a specific folder.
Let me know if that doesn't work. |

I tried to update the driver but when I try it says: "The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you have currently installed."

In Device manager remove any instance of those drives you have. Turn off your PC and unplug the drives. Boot up in XP. Then shut it off again. Plug one drive in first and see what happens.
Are these internal or external? |

I did this and now only one drive will actually be detected and the one that is detected still is doing the same thingas it was before. These drives are internal and the red, yellow, and both black wires are like shared between the two drives. When I turned the computer back on, a screen came up saying: "Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found Press F1 to continue, F2 to run setup utility" When you said to boot up in XP what exactly did you mean? I really appreciate your help. |

Boot up in XP means to just boot normally.
Which drive is jumpered as master and which is jumpered as slave? Make sure the Master is on the end of the IDE cable and the slave is in the middle. What did you do before the happend? |

The master drive is the DVD-Rom and it is on the end of the cable and the slave is in the middle.
I did shut it down wrong (pressed the power button on the PC) and then when I booted back up the drives weren't showing in the My Computer window and when I inserted a CD, the lights would come on like it was readin it but the computer wont be able to find the CD. |

Make sure in the BIOS (There's probably an update for your BIOS too) that the CD drives are not dissabled.
Your drives are hooked up right, but did you look at the little jumpers? The DVD should be jumpered as master and the CD as slave. Also go Right click My Computer | Manage | Disk Management, what do you see there? |

I'm sorry about asking so many questions, but I don't really know too much about computers...
How do I open the BIOS? What are the jumpers for hooking up the drives? When I open the disk management, I see 3 drives...the first one has no name, file system is - FAT, Healthy, but the capacity is 39 mb. I don't know what the first drive is. and the next two drives are my hard drives ( C: and Local Disk 2 F . Everything is healthy but it doesn't show my CD-Drives at all.

To get into the BIOS, you need to restart your computer and when you see the first screen, hit F2 or F10 or delete, what it says to hit to go into Setup.
Then from there, go through all of the options and look to see if the CD rom is dissabled. One more thing, your IDE cable could be unplugged or plugged in the wrong way. Make sure the red side of the cable is facing the red side of the power cable. Jumpers are tiny switches that are located on the bacl of the CD ROM. If you look close you can see them, make sure they are set correctly. |
