cant install winxp

i'm building a pc for a friend, he wanted me to stick his HDD in a new comp, eg new MB, RAM, processor etc...

thing is, he has win xp on his hdd originally, now i've stuck the hdd in the new comp, and had to reformat it. when i try to install win xp using the disc he gave me to use for him, it goes into RS-dos mode, and i cant use the 'setup' command, as it says it cant be run in rs-dos mode, any ideas?

also, i can't create an ntsc partition either

Is it a cd straight from Microsoft or from the computer retailer?

You need to boot from the CD. XP can't be installed from DOS. The CD will set up an NTFS partition for you before it installs XP, or if it leaves it as FAT32 you can easily convert it after XP is installed without destroying data. XP has a FAT to NTFS converter built in --- you run it from command-prompt in Windows: "convert c: /fs:ntfs" (without quotes).

i know it's not as clean as a format + install, but hey - it works!
