Cant install Windows XP Home Edition!!

Good morning!! Ok the specs: Athlon 900, 384mb RAM, Windows 98 SE. No luck installing XP!! Have tried just inserting the CD into the drive, and hoping it automatically runs, but to no avail. I have tried to start it by going to "run"and typing in the D:\setup.exe command and it gives me an error msg. Talked to the guy at the puter store, he said i had to go into my CMOS and change the sequence the way my puter boots up, and have my CD device be listed first. I did that, and when i have the XP cd in, it reads it, but then goes into a safe mode and gives me like 3 options, a Q and a R(retry??) and a F (format)
Any other options available to me?? What would happen if I formatted my puter, then put in the XP cd. I have been having a few annoying issues with my puter, viola my reason to go with XP. When i start up my puter ( i always shut it down at night--wasting energy and it always freezes up if left unoccupied for a bit) 98% of the time comes up with the msg that it has found errors in the registry and must restart to fix them!!!! And I will be using my mozzila, or netscape, then after awhile, the words get blurry and black and the screen freezes up!! So annoying!!

Sorry for all the questions. Hope ur enjoying the weekend. Cold here in Nova Scotia. Thank you very much.

Hi, it doesn't sound like that CD you have is bootable. What does it say on the CD? With Windows XP Home, I'm not sure if the layout of the files are different or not. But in Windows, go to File Explorer and browse the CD, the setup should be in the root directory or under i386.

It's pretty cold here in Maine too.

maybe you should just go with a format then? sounds like you've got some old stuff on their that could be clogging up some files or programs running. How long has it been since you last formatted? Plus, it is much better to start with a fresh install of a new OS then to install XP over whatever exsisting OS you are using.

UPDATE!!!!

Formatted my puter last night, XP wouldnt load up!! Re-installed 98 SE. HAd a few hiccups, so reformatted this morning with 98 SE. Seems to be working ok, But wont allow me to Install any Netscape browsers!! Have tried 4.77 up to current 7.1!! No luck, 1 error it gives me is that there is not enough memory in my temp file!! So now using IE!! Wil try to download mozzila and see what happens!!

Back to my XP home edition!! Im wondering if he sold me the wrong pkg!! Bought it at a legimate puter store!! On the package it says it is to be sold with brand new computer (which mine isnt!! lol) and no where on the CD does it state it is Windows XP!!! At top says "recoveyr CD media" then below "For distribution only with a new ALC micro PC" At the very bottom in ssmal writing it states it is a microsoft product. And in the middle it states support for this product is provided by ALC and gives there 1800 # I do have the product key sticker and it states it is for Windows Xp!! Guess will go back to store and confirm, it is the correct CD!! thanks

Yep, you don't have an legit copy it sounds like. You don't sell Recovery CD's. It should have the XP/MS hologram on it.
