can't install pc-cillin

GOT MY FIRST LAPTOP! rock on!

but was forced to get vista.

so anyway . . . i'm trying to install my trend micro pc-cillin on the new laptop and it won't let me. the pc-cillin has a 'microsoft vista verified' sticker or something like that on the box. when i put the cd in the drive it autoplays but when i click the 'install pc-cillin' button a window pops up saying something like 'a fatal windows error has occured that has prevented the program from being installed'.

SO i figured it had something to do with the fact that the laptop came with some norton trial thing, so i used task manager to shut down the norton tray icon and then tried to install the pc-cillin and i got the same error.

how do i get rid of the crappy norton thing? i can't find any 'add/remove programs' thing like in xp. how do i make it let me install pc-cillin (a MUCH better prog than norton).

oh and why is hp now only offering laptops with vista? who at microsoft has their hand in hp's you-know-where? what a load of . . . junk . . .

ok anyway, any help is appreciated. desperately want pc-cillin installed asap! thanks, guys!

cynthia

Try Control Panel > Programs and Features > Installed Programs.

If you're willing to pay for it, I'd highly recommend NOD32. It's the most effective antivirus program I've found, with the slightest memory usage. There is also a 30-day trial.

No comment on HP and Microsoft. I know if I were buying a laptop, the first thing I'd do is nuke the drive and install XP.

hey hey codex!

thanks for the programs tip - i found the norton stuff and uninstalled it and restarted the laptop and tried to install pc-cillin again and got the same error *again*! what the ?

and i would LOVE to put xp on this thing, but i read that it's tough to find a lot of the drivers for xp since the laptop was built for vista. i found a whole bunch of the drivers i would need for xp home, but there are a few that i've heard are difficult to find - the sound and touchpad and wireless are some of the supposedly hard ones. how bad you think it'd be getting everythign setup with xp?

any more ideas about the pc-cillin?

thanks!

cynthia

How new of a model is the laptop? If you bought a laptop model that was made during the "XP to Vista" transition period, you might be in luck for drivers. Check the HP driver site.

Also, your main problem is that its a PC. Return it and get a Mac :p (j/k)

hey spike har har har very funny!

but it's like a very new model - hp pavilion dv6605us.

btw, i already figured out the can't-install-pc-cillin problem. you have to turn off the user authentification whatever thingee first. oy this vista is stupid . . . is there any way of switching to xp, people? do i have any hope of finding all the drivers?

thanks for everything, peeps!

Yes you can, all you have to do is buy a copy of XP.

That doesn't solve her driver issue. A lot of drivers for laptops are proprietary.

Vista isn't as bad as you make it out to be though, everyone thought the same thing about XP when it first came out, give it some time. SP1 should fix a lot of your UAC complaints along with it's other little quirks. I would remove all of the other HP pre-installed apps as well and you will find that Vista runs much better without all of the bloated useless software that HP or any other manufacturer installs.

If you want to install XP, hp.com should list all the drivers for your hardware if you go to the website and type in your model number in the support and drivers download page.
Now is the time to do it-the worst that can happen is that you drop the restore cd in the tray and restore Vista.

hp.com does not list all the drivers. i found a page on hp's site with a list of xp drivers for my specific laptop, but not all of them were there. the chipset drivers, sound, touchpad, and wireless adapter drivers (i think there may have been a couple more) were not listed.

i was told that microsoft is only allowing a certain few companies/distributors sell xp with their products any more. otherwise, companies are being forced to sell vista with their products. anyway, i guess hp can't even give support for their laptops that come with vista if someone puts xp on them - thus they can't provide the drivers. now why they would have a select few, i don't know.

man i would love to get xp on there - even though i'd have to go buy it separately (even though i have already paid for a vista license included in my laptop - grr microsoft money-grubbers). i'm just not sure about the drivers.

one thing i have not done is start reinstalling my programs. i don't know if my programs will even work with vista. will office? i think i have like 2003 or something. will photoshop 7? nero?

*sigh*
