Can't get all audio after upgrade - help!

Ok...
So first, I stepped in to the 20th century be getting FiOS. Love it. So then, I managed to get all my Windows updates ( XP, SP 2 +) . I used to be able to pop a DVD in the drive and watch a movie. Now I have the latest Windows Media player and I get the soundtrack, but not the track that has the actors speaking lines. I can't get the actors dialog at all. All my setting for audio in Windows are fine. I have the same problem on all the players I have installed, and on any movie I try to watch. This is very frustrating. Please help me....

Beth

FiOS? Are you refering to the fiber to the home high speed internet from verizon?
Possibly what could have happened was that during the upgrades the software decoder you rely on for decording the audio was damaged.
But my queston is this, does the DVD work fine except for the speaking parts? IE does the video play, and does the background sounds for the movie play?

Yes to the FiOS...

Yes to does the movie play - you get everything but the actor's voices. you get the picture and the background track...just no dialog. And it is this way regardless of what player I try to watch the movie with...so I think it is windows. Question is, what do I need to fix it?

It sounds like the preferences for that are set wrong. You'll have to look in your decoder settings-if you look in Audio settings, check to see if your DVD software is set to use something weird like 5.1 audio playback, or surround sound.
All the software you've installed uses the same underlaying decoder software that is installed on your computer to take care of the audio, so if the settings are wrong it won't work properly in any of the programs.

I Have a Dell and the speakers are a little bar that attaches to the underside of the monitor - came with the PC.
