brand new VAIO totally screwed up!
I'm running WinXP on a brand new VAIO. I was surfing the net when all of a sudden everything started running really slow - even Word and Excel. I decided to shut down while I ate dinner, and when I returned a few hours later and started up again, my computer would not start up. I get the following message when the Welcome screen appears:
Cannot create instance of class ‘CID_HomePassportSet’ with interface ‘IID_BaseFace’. Error performing inpage operation. I click OK and proceed with entering my password, at which point I get the following 2 errors: Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security right or a corrupt local profile…(window disappears before I can get it all down) Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. It idles on the Windows XP screen with the blue bars zipping across. It even idles here when I start in safe mode. I finally managed to get all started up in safe mode and I created a new profile. It takes forever to start up in any mode. When it idles on the Windows XP screen long enough, it starts to run chkdsk on its own. It has started chkdsk approximately 5 times, but has completed the process only twice. It froze the other times. Performance does not improve upon completion of chkdsk. So far I have been unsuccessful with trying to log on to the new account I created - it freezes at "applying your personal settings..." I don't think I am going to be able to start up in normal mode at all, even with the new user account. What can I do here? The computer is brand new and this really has me ticked off! |

If you do not have any personal files on the computer yet, you could do a system restore with the cds Sony has provided for you. That would be the hassle free way.

I'm willing to bet that you got a bad peice of hard ware. Keep in mind that laptops are a lot more compact, making them a lot more vulnerable to heat. Make sure it is well ventilated and that the ventilation holes are not covered.
I would just try what goober suggested first. If that fails, take it back to the store and get a mac book pro ![]() no but seriously, take it back to the store and get it exchanged for a new one.

I called Sony, they have to service it because I can't do a system recovery. When recovery reaches step 3 of 4, a blue screen appears that says KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and it forces me to shut down. When the blue screen appears, the hard drive also makes a clicking noise. That is why Sony insists on servicing it. I just wonder if I have a lemon.

What was the error code it gave you?
If it was 0xC000009C STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR (which in my experience is the most common), you can try opening the console and typing "chkdsk /r c:" without the quotes, and hitting enter. It'll ask if you want to schedule a boottime scan; hit "y" and enter, then restart. |

If the harddrive is clicking, it most likely has a faulty hard drive which would make a lot of sense with the problems you are having. Do you still have the in store waranty? If you do, it could save you the hassle of dealing with sony.

Send it to Sony or the store. It doesn't matter.

Yeah, the store will send it to Sony but at the same time, the store replaces your Laptop with another one. Thats what they did with my old HP anyways....and it broke a second time after the full waranty ended

I don't mind sending it to Sony because he said I would have it back in 5-7 days after they receive it and I have too much else going on to worry about it.
Don't get me wrong though; I'm very disappointed that it's fried after owning it for only 4 weeks. And really I've only USED it for 2 of those 4 weeks, since I was gone on a business trip for 2 weeks. |
