800 mb cd-r?

do 800 mb non-music cd-r's exist? i wanna burn some movies to them (i don't have a dvd burner; i just wanna save them on cd so they don't take up my hdd space) but i can't find them *anywhere*! all my movies are at least 700mb and won't fit on my 700 mb cd-r's. thx!

The biggest CD's I know of are 80 mins / 700MB. What you can do is zip them, it wont compress it worth anything but you can segment it into 700MB parts. So if you want to zip a bunch of movies and split it up into 700MB parts for backup then it would work. Or you can have a backup HD drive like me, where I put all my big files. Or you can buy a DVD burner, 4.5gig sides. It's up to you!

thanks so much! i don't have the money for a dvd burner, though. how do you split a file up into smaller parts? i thought you could only zip the whole file. i do have a backup hdd - it's my server, too - but i wanna clear it off and reserve it for server use. and if i don't have the money for a dvd burner theni don't have the money for another hdd either. i did a search on google (just put in +"800 mb cd-r") and there were references to 800 mb cd-r's. i've never seen them, though. you think they'll ever be able to make bigger ones?

No, I doubt they will. And I've never seen an 800 meg cd-r. In fact, all the burning packages I've seen only support up to 700 meg disks. Sometimes however you can use a drives 'overburn' capabilities to burn up to 800 megabytes onto a disk. Unfortunately, compatibility issues are often seen with this since many drives fail to read the larger disk. And with DVD+/- everywhere now, and them being as cheap as they are I doubt you'll see anyone pushing them.

Yes, they do. 800MB/90Min discs do exist, but they're relatively rare.
And expensive.

thanks everyone!

hey core, do you know any local stores (best buys or circuit cities or walmarts) where i could get them?

i'll check out that site, rd2dg, but a couple of the movies are already in half (each half about 715mb) and i'd hate to have 4 cd's to make up one movie.

also, i have nero (love it) - doesn't it have some over-write thing where you can put more on a cd? 715 mb is SO close to 700! it makes me sick that i'm *that* close!!

p.s. fenis-wolf; LOVE your avatar! that 'lord of the peeps' thing ROCKS!

p.p.s. anyone know of any good, relatively cheap dvd burners? what about any good freeware programs i could use to cut out the intro and end credits of DL'd movie files?

p.p.p.s here's one brand of them at an online store: http://www.precisioncddvd.com/90mi80mbcdby.html

I have a Pacific Digital 8x DVD+/- burner that I bought from Staples. It came with Roxio software, and its pretty decent.

how much did it cost? i wouldn't use the software that came with it, though. sticking with nero for that.
